Training on skin cancer prevention for persons with albinism in Sebei and Bugisu region
cluster of health workers from facilities working closely with albinos on suncare services had a training on skin cancer prevention for persons with albinism.
The trainees included Medical doctors, clinical officers, district health educators, nurses and VHTs in Sebei and Bugisu bugisu region.
Over 400 people living with albinism in the nine districts of Sebei and Bugisu region are vulnerable and exposed to sun damage on their skins.
One of the core objectives is to empower and build the capacity to health workers on skin cancer preventive techniques on persons with albinism, and to conduct preventive quarterly clinics in their health centers.
This programme is powered by BEYOND suncare in partnership with SNUPA and Elgon Foundation of people with albinism to reduce the prevalence of skin cancer in our communities through the access to high quality sun protection services
Dr. Nabongo Kenneth while taking the trainees through the tool, highlighted the key areas to focus on during logistics, data collection and management.
Nabongo says by virtue of this training, the roles and responsibilities are evident in creating a network of supportive partners and stakeholders.
On relating the evolution of skin solar damage in non sun protected albino skin, Dr. Nabongo classified the risks on skin cancer as leading to High mortality rates.
However he says these effects can be stepped up through diagnosed preventions like sun safe practices, protective gears and sunscreen. He said!

The executive director for persons with albinism, Nekesa Elizabeth in her closing remarks stressed that efforts to harmonise and work closely with the selected personnel is to give the most adequate services to all persons with albinism.
Let's protect ourselves from skin cancer through prevention and rightful service providers enlisted in our cluster clinics in the Sebei and Bugisu region.
Nekesa affirmed support through the consortium of EFPA, SNUPA and BEYOND suncare in the designated areas. She says the journey in changing mindset and offering basic information affecting the people with albinism, the mandate is between us to reach out with preventive techniques and suncare services.
